{"id":1298,"date":"2007-06-04T10:50:06","date_gmt":"2007-06-04T09:50:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.splunge.co.uk\/richnilk\/?p=1298"},"modified":"2011-09-06T10:50:27","modified_gmt":"2011-09-06T09:50:27","slug":"462007-monday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.splunge.co.uk\/richnilk\/462007-monday\/","title":{"rendered":"4\/6\/2007 &#8211; Monday"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Not a cold day, not warm.\u00a0 Not a cloudy day, not sunny.\u00a0 Not a wet day, not dry.\u00a0 Not really a day.<\/p>\n<p>Woke up reassuringly late, but realised I had to get to the shops before the dreaded Monday curfew of 12.30.\u00a0 So I made my way down to town and bought some essentials from Casino.\u00a0 I wanted to buy some vegetables, but being a sort of village corner shop the vegetables there aren\u2019t particularly good \u2013 certainly not organic \u2013 and most seem well past their sell-by date.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to buy some internet as well \u2013 in particular to send\/receive email goodies \u2013 but the internet shop man goes to sleep on Sunday and Monday as well so it will have to wait \u2018til tomorrow.\u00a0 I wonder if he\u2019ll have any organic internet tomorrow?<\/p>\n<p>At home the job of the day was fixing the barn door.\u00a0\u00a0 The door is supported by a 2&#215;2 inch frame that has rotted at the base and will fall off it\u2019s hinge at any minute.\u00a0 So it was a job that needed doing, although it\u2019s one of those jobs that won\u2019t make a huge impact on the house generally.<\/p>\n<p>So I spent most of the day cutting off the old support and splicing-in a new one.\u00a0 It might sound simple but I decided to do a proper job of it rather than bodging it (gasp!), and as usual I ended-up using every tool in my toolbox.\u00a0 Of course that\u2019s an exaggeration, but the thought did intrigue me as to just how many tools I did use to do such a job.\u00a0 Being anal about these things I counted the tools as I packed-up and I counted 27 separate ones.\u00a0 But I was very proud of doing a good job.\u00a0 I had to learn a few new skills on the way (e.g I\u2019ve never spliced wood before, or used the angle-grinder to cut metal), and I now feel satisfied at a job well done.\u00a0\u00a0 At least now the door swings freely back and forth without risk of collapsing.<\/p>\n<p>I celebrated my fine work by grouting the tiles around the sink.\u00a0 Well I was out of champagne.<\/p>\n<p>Today\u2019s animal news:\u00a0 Now the bats have moved to the lower barn, it appears that a couple of swifts (or swallows, or housemartins \u2013 I can\u2019t tell the difference) have moved in to the main barn.\u00a0 They built a nest in there because the door\u2019s been left open for so long.\u00a0 It\u2019s a bit silly of them because I do close the door from time to time and they won\u2019t be able to get in and out all the time.\u00a0\u00a0 I suppose I could leave the door open for them for a few weeks \u2013 just long enough for them to raise a family \u2013 but it could be a bit inconvenient.<\/p>\n<p>Wildlife eh!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Not a cold day, not warm.\u00a0 Not a cloudy day, not sunny.\u00a0 Not a wet day, not dry.\u00a0 Not really a day.
