What happened to the Age of Aquarius?  I don’t mean the song that has resounded around my head since the hippie era.  I mean the actual New Age astrological Age of Aquarius that has been much heralded since the sixties. You see, from all accounts I heard it was going to be quite a fundemental seachange in mankind’s development and I was quite looking forward to it. It’s apparent non-arrival has left me feeling a bit short-changed. I was expecting to be a bit more cosmically connected to all people of the world, uniting to share knowledge, and spreading peace and understanding etc etc. The only thing that seems to arrived so far is the Internet. But surely global enlightenment won’t come about just by swapping gossip, bad jokes, recipes for biological weapons, and by downloading porn.

So, I wonder if the prophets who heralded the Age of Aquarius actually just worked in the cosmic marketing department. Was it just another case of the message being completely out-of-step with what’s actually been delivered?

I suspect. But I hope.

In the meantime, here’s a piece of prose-like poetry I wrote once on this subject.

Not quite Aquarius

I was promised a new dawn at the age of five
And told of the New Age at six,
The message recurred throughout my life
about the Age of Aquarius.

Super conscious humans with mystic revelation,
man’s benevolence and universal integration,
en-masse enlightenment and self realisation,
and a gateway to the mind’s true liberation.

The message sounded good, but by twenty-one
this new world order had not yet begun
And the new dawn I saw aged 33
Was not brotherly love, just uncertainty

Not quite Aquarius

So the moon now sits in the southern half,
as Jupiter aligns with Mars.
And I’m still not integrated in the Whole
It’s just the World Wide Web.
and I don’t feel unified with the energy of the universe
over a WiFi link from my bed.

I will herald you in the ‘end of times’, right here in my broadband living-room.
The Internet has become the collective consciousness.
Chat rooms are now where we integrate and unify.
Where sympathy and trust can abound alongside falsehoods and derision.
Websites provide the golden living dreams of visions.
E-mails and Facebooks are for mystic revelations,
not to free the minds of ignorance and delusion but to share cosmic gossip amongst peoples of many tongues and nations.

The Web provides those awakened seekers of third-eye vision with an individual journey of eternal spirit……………
………via Google and Alta Vista.

That’s not quite Aquarius
